Our appreciated, but not so much beloved powerful economic star in the far east, has far more to offer than its famous food and Shanghai.
And I would strongly recommend everybody to visit this country, cause it is one of the most bizzare places of the world:
And yes, some reports our beloved western media like Spiegel Online (which claims to be one of the best magazines in Germany) are part wise true (e.g. in air pollution), but they did not mention that China put a lot of efforts to get things better. And especially in Beijing I saw an dramatic increase of the air quality compared to my first visits 5 years ago.
I would describe China a bit as the US in the 50s or 60s last millennium. Men have an unbelievable macho behaviour, they like to show off in the public and are smoking everywhere.As well China as a state likes to show its power like the US did in the past, where they still were powerful - crazy big official buildings, big expenses in military, ...
As people are getting more and more wealthy, they also like to spend their free time at their wonderful touristic attractions (some of them are used by the government to increase the believe in the countries rulers e.g. Great Wall or Tianmen) - which basically means, that the Chinese don't wait for western tourists to spend their money, cause their domestic market is so huge! So don't wonder, if people don't care if they are speaking English or not.
Anyhow it is quite easy to travel around, as the train network is pretty good, all cities could be reached by plane and if you're asking a bit around you will always find people who are speaking English.
My recommendation is to definitely to this country and spent their some time - I would rather go five times to China, than once to the south of Thailand. People are as nice as in Thailand, but the country is much more clean, it is not so hot and there is much more to do.

- on one hand side, the government is still ruling in a strict way (one child policy, censorship of Internet, ...) - and we call the system which is ruling this country still communistic
- on the other hand side this country is one of the most capitalistic places of the world - where even the Americans could still learn something about - so in our terms good ;-)
